Cooking and Telling Stories y El Pilon
“Cooking and Telling Stories y El Pilon” came about as I was teaching my young daughter how to cook. Each recipe was a story. She remarked one day, “Mom, you have to write these stories down”. One Christmas I surprised her with a small book with the cooking recipes and stories she learned from me. My family loved the book and encouraged me to write other recipes and look into a publication. The recipes in the book are authentic. The word El Pilon” means mortar and pestle. In any Puerto Rican household you will find a Pilon as we use this pestle to smash fresh garlic and other delicious herbs. In fact, most households may have more than one as many of us like to collect them. I possess an art piece of “El Pilon” created by Vincent Huertas, an artist living in Puerto Rico. The art piece of El Pilon is on the cover of my book and a poem by Vincent about the Pilon is in the book as well.
